Sandilands says the younger players need all the experience they can get in order to grow

Aaron Sandilands chats to Docker TV after the loss to the Sydney Swans

Sydney earned a comprehensive victory against Fremantle at the SCG, running out 59-point winners on Saturday night.

Trailing by 33-points at half time, Fremantle’s task was made all the more harder with Joel Hamling ruled out for the rest of the game with a concussion sustained late in the second quarter.

Fremantle were left to rue missed opportunities early, kicking 0.4 in the opening term from 14 forward entries.

Sydney had one less forward entry at quarter time but their 3.3 (21) total saw the Swans take a 17-point lead into the first break.

Michael Walters flew the flag up front playing a hand in many of Freo’s scoring opportunities but even he would have felt he missed some chances from his 2.3 total.

Fremantle’s midfields benefited once against from silver service from Aaron Sandilands as Freo won the hitouts 50-14 on the way to winning the clearances 31-25.

Sandilands also delivered up front, kicking two goals from his two marks inside 50.

Freo coach Ross Lyon was left to lament his side's lack of efficiency going forward, especially in the first quarter when they had some momentum.

"We were really pleased with our start, we were winning the ball and going in well, but we just didn't hit the scoreboard," Lyon said.

"We struggled to have a physical presence up there for most of the night.

"There were times when we had time and space and we bombed it in, and our decision-making wasn't fantastic, but our players will learn from that."

Despite Fremantle winning the midfield battle against the league’s leading clearance team heading into round nine, the difference was a lack of connection between the midfield and the forwardline.

Ed Langdon continued to shine in the absence of running midfielders Stephen and Bradley Hill. The speedy 22-year-old collected 29 disposals, took nine marks and kicked a goal what is building into a breakout season.

Defenders Luke Ryan (10 marks) and Nathan Wilson (nine marks) worked hard in Hamling’s absence while Alex Pearce shouldered the load on Lance Franklin, who kicked 3.1.

MEDICAL ROOM

Sydney: Zak Jones came from the field in the final term after a head knock and didn't return, but the Swans looked to have got through without any major injury worries.

Fremantle: Hamling's concussion will need to be monitored during the week.

NEXT UP

The Swans head north to take on Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday, while the Dockers will welcome the in-form North Melbourne to Optus Stadium on Sunday.
