Freo’s Nat Fyfe has jumped to number two on legendary AFL journalist Mike Sheahan’s 2014 Top 50 players list, which included four Freo players.

Fyfe, who was ranked 13th in the 2013 list, was only headed by Geelong captain Joel Selwood.

Sheahan spoke to fremantlefc.com.au in February, when he predicted the Freo superstar was moving up his list, fast.

“Thirteenth with a bullet,” he said. “I think he’s got a high single figure next to his name this year.”

Sheahan praised Fyfe in his 2014 top 50 list.

“He's everything every young footballer would want to be, right down to his surfer look. He is taller than you might think, has a great leap (coupled with an exhilarating sense of adventure), is a brilliant competitor and scary brave.”

Ruckman Aaron Sandilands, who was not in the top 50 last season, earned 16th spot on the 2014 list.

Sheahan said in the February interview Sandilands could be the most influential player in the AFL this season.

He reiterated those thoughts in his assessment this year.

“The biggest man in the game and often the biggest influence in the game. Master craftsman at centre bounces and around the ground, deceptively mobile and creative with ball in hand. No.1 in the competition for hitouts and no one directs them better.”

David Mundy was in the top 50 for a second consecutive season, ranking number 36.

He was 16th in 2013. Sheahan wrote: “Freo’s biggest kick-getter, superb at the stoppages and a penetrating kick. Not sure he reached 2013 heights, but still a high-quality midfielder who often is devastating in tandem with Sandilands.”

Hayden Ballantyne’s All Australian season didn’t go unnoticed, with the small forward ranked 48th.

“Just like Ross Lyon, I like him, cheeky little bugger that he is. Just pipped Eddie Betts for All-Australian selection, probably because of his defensive work. He’s brilliant inside forward 50 and works like a beaver. He has to be great for morale,” Sheahan wrote.

Michael Johnson (24th), Chris Mayne (28th) and Ryan Crowley (39th) were in Sheahan’s 2013 top 50 but did not make it this season.
