Ross Lyon says the shoulder injury sustained by Nat Fyfe on Tuesday is only minor and he’s confident the dual Doig Medallist will return to full fitness soon.

Fyfe was playing for the Australian International Rules team in a practice match against a NSW GAA team in Western Sydney when he injured his right shoulder diving for a mark in the closing minutes of the final term.

Lyon, who is an assistant coach for this Saturday night’s clash against Ireland at Patersons Stadium, saw the incident.

“He was playing forward and the ball came in, it dipped, and as Nathan does he competed,” Lyon said.

“He marked the ball, he and his opponent rolled to the ground and he just came off with a slight AC joint.”

The superstar midfielder will have scans on Wednesday, but Lyon said the club was “incredibly confident” the injury was not serious.

“It’s really at the minor end,” he said.

“We were all concerned at the time, (but) it has got nothing to do with his previous shoulder problems.

“It’s certainly not long-term serious.”

Lyon said he wasn’t troubled the injury happened outside of Fyfe’s club duties.

“We know he’s a special player and important to our campaign, but there’s nothing you do in life without risk, and this is really at the minor end,” he said.

“We’re confident he’ll be fine, incredibly confident. It’s an AC sprain.

“There’s nothing significant here. It’s something that can be rehabilitated, there’s no surgery, it’s just the time.

“Ligaments heal, he’ll strengthen it and he’ll be fine.”

Lyon added Fyfe had already gained invaluable experience from spending the past three days with the star-studded Australian team.

“Overall, Nathan has really enjoyed the experience,” he said.

“It’s been a wonderful three days in Sydney with the best players and coach in the competition.

“He’s still looking to try and get involved, it’s a great concept.”

The Australian team, including Fyfe and Lyon, arrived in Perth on Tuesday night to continue preparations for Saturday’s Virgin Australia International Rules Series.
