Fremantle’s top pick at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft has picked up plenty of advice on and off the field from leadership group member Lee Spurr.

Lachie Weller lived with Spurr for a week when he first arrived at the club from NEAFL side Southport in December last year.

“’Spurry’ is in the leadership group and someone that you can learn off,” Weller said.

“He’s really professional the way he goes about things.

“He’s a pretty good cook as well. I’ve got a few cooking pointers off him.”

The 19-year-old midfielder said he had picked up quite a few life skills since making the move over from Queensland.

“(The biggest adjustment has been) settling in to the host family and all the things that come with that,” Weller said.

“Moving all your stuff over, buying a car and learning the nice cafes around and all that sort of stuff.

“(I’m just) trying to make the place feel like home a little bit.”

Since the first week with Spurr, Weller has been living with fellow new recruit Ed Langdon at their host family’s home.

While getting used to the full-time rigours of the AFL, Weller said it hadn’t been too much of a shock to the system.

“I’m adjusting,” he said.

“It’s great to come in every day and be around the boys.

“I’m really enjoying the training and the challenges that we have.”

Weller played his second game for Peel Thunder on Saturday and was among the team’s best with 22 posessions and three majors, including a five-bounce running goal which showed a glimpse of his potential.

“I (like to) use my speed,” Weller said.

“It’s something I’m trying to bring into my game as much as I can.

“It was great to get the win down there and it’s a real exciting year ahead for Peel.

“I’m just taking it game by game, working on my consistency and trying to adapt to the game plan as much as I can.”
