Brisbane Lions assistant coach Gary O’Donnell says the two-week suspension of Stefan Martin will be a big loss to the Lions but says fellow ruckman Matthew Leuenberger is up to the challenge.

Martin accepted the suspension for striking during the loss to Adelaide at the Gabba on Saturday.

The Match Review Panel offered the ruckman the two-week penalty with an early plea after finding he struck Adelaide’s Luke Brown during the second quarter.

“Stef will be a big blow. He’s been in good form and he gives us a real punch around the stoppages.

“Obviously it’s a good opportunity for Matty Leuenberger to start as first ruck. We saw signs last week, he took a couple of good marks, and a couple of good goals. He’s just starting to hit a bit of good form and he can carry that on in the full ruck position”, O’Donnell said.

“Matty is probably going to be doing 80% of the ruck, Harris Andrews can ruck for us, we might even have a look at Archie Smith come from the reserves to fill that role.”

O’Donnell said there was plenty to like about Saturday night’s performance. The Lions led by 24 points at the final change before the Crows ran away with a 13-point victory.

“It was a heartening performance, we were able to do some pretty good stuff for three quarters, and probably ran out of legs in the last quarter against Adelaide who have been a good team this year.

“For us to take it up to them with contested ball, our movement to get the ball in quickly to a few of our forwards and score and to be three or four goals up for a fair part of the night, it was a good game for us.”

O’Donnell said Jordon Bourke in just his fourth senior game showed he was capable of playing at both ends of the ground. Bourke was switched up front from defence on Saturday. The 20-year old played much of his junior football in the forward line.

“We swung him from a defender to a forward and he kicked two early goals.

“He didn’t do a lot after that but there were encouraging signs, he took a couple of good grabs and he’s still learning the caper in game number four.

“Hopefully he’s better for it this week.”
