Nat Fyfe has thrown his support behind scrapping the substitute rule in place of the traditional four-man bench.

Fyfe told Channel 7’s Game Day on Sunday that he was in favour of returning to a simple four-player interchange rather the current system.

In 2011, the AFL introduced a three-man interchange and substitute, which has prompted on-going debate.

“Scrap it,” Fyfe said.

“I’m a believer that four people on the bench is best.”

Matthew Pavlich, who was also on the program, said the rule needed review and was introduced out of fairness, so if a player was injured they could be replaced without reducing rotations.
