Burgeoning young Fremantle tall forward Matt Taberner is ahead of schedule in his development despite his omission from the AFL side this week, says senior coach Ross Lyon.

Taberner was omitted for Sunday’s game against GWS at Domain Stadium after a quiet game in last week’s nail biting win over Richmond with seven disposals and one goal.

The 2012 Rookie Draftee has played 13 games this year for 12 goals but Lyon said the 22-year-old was a strong future prospect.

Fyfe will not be rushed

“We don’t think he’s been at his best and put his best foot forward, we know he’s better than that,” he said.

“He’s a wonderful young player.

“Young players go up and down.”

Fremantle: The run home

Lyon said for a key position player of his age and size he was still on the right path.

“He’s ahead of schedule as a rookie list player at 196cm,” he said.

“He’s going really well but it’s not unexpected (to be omitted).”

Taberner has played 26 games for Fremantle since debuting in round 13, 2013.
