The countdown to the Starlight Purple Haze game against Gold Coast in round two got underway last Friday, as players and supporters came together for the 2016 Starlight Purple Haze “Before the Game luncheon”.

Mosman’s Restaurant hosted the luncheon that was attended by Freo’s Starlight ambassadors Chris Mayne, Lachie Weller, Alex Silvagni, Lachie Neale, Matt de Boer, Garrick Ibbotson and Aaron Sandilands.

The afternoon also featured a message from Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich, a special musical performance from Freo legend Luke McPharlin, and an auction chaired by Chris Mayne.

The event successfully kicked off Purple Haze, with the patrons generously donating to a cause that Freo has championed for the past 14 years, according to Mayne.

Prepare for a Purple Haze

“We raised close to $20,000 today from a simple luncheon and auction,” Mayne said.

“Our goal is always to raise as much money as we can for the foundation, and we’re especially trying to break the one million dollar mark since starting the relationship with Starlight 14 years ago.”

Mayne displayed potential as an auctioneer in his post-football life, actively involved in getting guests to bid on items ranging from signed guersney’s, pre-match coin tosses, and art pieces by the Phil Doncon.

“I’ve done it for a few years now, where I try and encourage people to donate as much as possible,” he said.

“Myself, Lachie Neale and Alex Silvagni were up there trying to raise as much money as possible for all the items.

“We had a great contribution from the kind folks there and to have everyone involved for this cause was just amazing.”

Mayne has long been a key contributor as a Starlight ambassador and spoke of how personal his relationship with the foundation is.

Host a Purple Haze Party

“I was able to share a bit of my story, why I’m involved, and what the ambassadors do for the foundation,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful thing to be involved in and something that I hold very close to my heart.”
