Competition for the Freo ruck spots has been a talking point throughout the pre-season, as viable options Jonathon Griffin, Zac Clarke and Jack Hannath attempt to solidify their position alongside Aaron Sandilands in Freo’s best 22.

While playing in the ruck provides less opportunity for senior selection each week, Griffin said the competition had never been to the detriment of their relationship.

“It’s not difficult at all for us to remain mates,” Griffin said.

“We still manage to have a laugh at training, even when we’re competing in the ruck and marking contests.”

The friendship between the big men is what underpins their collective effort to see continual improvement, according to Griffin.

“We work together to better our individual games, and thoroughly enjoy the competitive spirit we have as a group,” he said.

Griffin also reiterated that their camaraderie isn’t just limited to the confines of Fremantle Oval.

“Obviously we really enjoy each other’s company around the footy club,” he said.

“But I think what really helps us is how well, and how often we get together off the field too.”

While Freo’s squad selection for the round one clash with the Bulldogs is still a week away, the Purple Army have reason to be confident in whichever ruck combo takes the field.
