The 2013 AFL season was the Fremantle Dockers most successful season to date with several individual milestones and club record-breaking performances.

Round 20 against Greater Western Sydney was no exception.

Braving wet winter conditions in front of a home crowd, Fremantle gave what was described as a “professional performance” by coach Ross Lyon and recorded a decisive victory over the second-year Giants 24.13(157) to 6.8(44)

The 113-point win boosted Freo closer to top of the ladder and became Fremantle’s biggest win in the club’s history, surpassing the 112-point winning margin over Collingwood in 2005.

Forward Chris Mayne said finding out he was part of the record-breaking squad was a good feeling but the team was already in the zone for the games that followed.

“On the day you don’t really notice accolades and records,” he said.

“It’s more about the boys fighting together to get the job done.

“At the end of the match, when people mentioned we broke the record, it was a good feeling but we’re already looking to the next game.”

Mayne was one of the many stand-out players in the 2013 match, gathering 18 touches, two goals and laying a game-high 11 tackles in what was his 100th game.

“I think I was asked a question by the media that week ‘would you rather 10 tackles or five goals’ and I said ‘clearly 10 tackles’,” he said.

“I had 11 [tackles] that day, which to me just said ‘yep, I’ve definitely applied myself on pressure’.

“To play a 100 games for the Fremantle Football Club, pretty much where I’ve grown up and become part of the furniture, it was a really proud moment for myself and my family and I was super excited about getting out there and getting involved.”

Teammate Hayden Ballantyne kicked two goals for the Freo side, with one of them earning him an AFL Goal of the Year nomination.

Other standout performers for the Round 20 2013 Freo lineup included Michael Barlow (27 touches, seven tackles and a goal), Lachie Neale (26 touches, three goals), Nick Suban (26 touches, two goals), Michael Johnson (26 touches, seven marks) and Tendai Mzungu (23 touches, nine marks).

Following the dominant victory over the youthful Giants, Fremantle went on to make the finals for the second year in a row but made history by making it all the way to the Grand Final for the first time but fell just short of winning the premiership.

Fremantle will face a different challenge in 2016 when they host a more experienced Greater Western Sydney at Domain Stadium on Saturday as they strive to improve on their season so far and bring back the dominance from past seasons.
