Fremantle’s defensive unit has been stretched against teams with a number of tall forwards, but this weekend, the challenge is a different one. Adelaide’s Eddie Betts has every trick in the book, and it seems like he can score from anywhere. The Crow’s leading goal kicker for the past two years, Betts has also won the Goal of Year Award on two occasions. Ruckman Zac Clarke is set to play his 100th game for Fremantle, and has overcome a number of obstacles to reach the milestone. He suffered a knee injury during the first ruck contest of 2016, against the Western Bulldogs in round 1, and came back through the WAFL. At 26 years of age, he is having his second best season at AFL level in terms of hitouts won per game.
When – Sunday afternoon
After playing just two of their first 16 games on Sunday’s, four of the Fremantle’s last five for the season have been on a Sunday at Domain Stadium. Adelaide have played their past two games in the City of Churches, so they are be travelling for the first time in three weeks and have had the benefit of an eight day break.
Where – Perth
Fremantle and Adelaide have met 14 times in Perth, with Freo coming away victorious on 9 occasions. Adelaide’s average score at Domain Stadium against Fremantle is 84 points, well down on their overall average score of 94 against the same opponent. Fremantle haven’t lost to the Crows in Perth since 2012.
Why – This game matters
Following the derby, Stephen Hill said Fremantle would keep working on their game plan as they look to build into next. Freo will use these final few weeks to afford more senior experience to first year player’s Darcy Tucker, Sam Collins and Connor Blakely, while testing Tommy Sheridan and Chris Mayne in different roles. Adelaide are tied in a four way tussle for second on the ladder, as they sit level with Sydney, Geelong and GWS. Every point matters in the race for a home final.
