SUMMARY
Returned from almost a year on the sidelines to play all 22 games in 2017, proving crucial with his on-field contribution and leadership of a young defence. The veteran continued this role during the pre-season and will pass the 250-game milestone if he plays every game in 2018.

WHAT THE COACH SAYS (Roger Hayden)
Michael has been managed over the pre-season, he’s had few issues during the off-season with his injuries. Looking to build coming into the JLT series.

Season by Season

After coming off a four-game season in 2016 due to injury, Johnson played every game in 2017 for the first time since 2012. Johnson was especially crucial at the start of the season, proving his versatility by playing in the ruck as a back-up to Aaron Sandilands.

Played just four games in 2016 after being forced out for the season with knee and hamstring injuries suffered in round 5 against Carlton.

Johnson was sidelined for eight weeks with a hamstring injury but when he took to the field, was in fine form. Was solid down back and his sublime foot skills are key to Freo’s attack.

Injury prevented the brilliant defender from reaching the heights of his 2013 All Australian season. Johnson was greatly missed in Freo’s finals campaign and will look to get his body right for 2015.

Johnson has been a rock in Fremantle's AFL-leading defence in 2013. His cool play off half-back and his uncompromising courage was a highlight. Johnson also chalked up his 150th Freo game in the round 1 win over West Coast, leaving him eligible for life membership.

Johnson relished the opportunity to return to a permanent role on the half-back line in 2012 and was the club’s best rebound 50 player. Along with Luke McPharlin, he helped form the foundations of a Fremantle defence that ranked second in the AFL for fewest points conceded (behind Sydney).

He thrived as a loose man in the backline, winning the second-most marks in the competition in 2012 with 166 grabs. Only McPharlin finished ahead of him with 171. The majority of Johnson’s marks were uncontested, a category he led the entire AFL in with 149. He used the ball well, ranking 10th in the AFL for effective kicks (244). Most of these were short kicks, as he finished third overall in the competition for this statistic with 170.

Still well in his prime, Johnson has laid the foundations to go on with it in 2013 and will be a vital cog in Freo’s uncompromising backline again.

Johnson played every game of the season for the first time since 2006 and looked comfortable in a variety of roles. While he didn’t set the world on fire, he was serviceable throughout as a key defender or forward, and a backup ruckman. Johnson finished second overall at Freo for short kicks (98), third for total marks (98) and uncontested marks (79), fourth for contested marks (19) and fifth for hitouts (16). Played a blinder in round 24 with 30 disposals and 11 marks and Freo will be hoping for more of that in 2012.

Johnson was Freo’s Mr fix-it in 2010, playing a variety of roles that included backing up Aaron Sandilands in the ruck and key defensive and forward jobs. The only low point of his year was a club-imposed six-week suspension in the middle of the season.
