Peter Faulks did not play a senior game in 2012, but he made massive strides in his development as a key defender.

He played in a Peel Thunder defence that was often under the pump but was hardly ever beaten by his direct opponent.

Faulks added an offensive side to his game in 2012, gathering high disposals and marks in most of his games for Peel.

Freo’s defence was very tough to break into last season, but Luke McPharlin is in the latter stages of his career, so Faulks will look to continue building in 2013 and push for senior selection.

Although he only played two senior games in 2011, Faulks showed enough to suggest he has a future in the heart of Freo’s defence in the years to come. He made his debut against Carlton in round 21 and did a good job considering the Blues’ midfield dominated the game. Faulks’ season will perhaps be best remembered for an act of bravery against Collingwood in round 23 when he hit a pack at full pace going with the flight of the ball. He ended up with a broken jaw, a fractured cheekbone and a ton of respect from his peers. Faulks should get ample opportunities to cement a spot in 2012.

A good pre-season and two years at Freo has the former Sydney Swan in a solid position to push for more senior action. The hardest part will be to break into defence, with Luke McPharlin and Zac Dawson settled and Alex Silvagni also pushing hard for selection.
