Fremantle’s Emma O’Driscoll has been named for a second consecutive year in the AFL Players’ 22under22 final team, after an incredible 2022 season.

The back-to-back achievement is another feather in the cap of the 21-year-old defender, who has consistently impressed on-field over her first three seasons in the AFLW competition.

Named in the backline of this year’s 22under22 team, O’Driscoll was the tenth most popular player selected in the fan-voted process, with 69 per cent of all voters selecting her in their nominated side.

O’Driscoll averaged 8.6 disposals, 4.5 intercepts, three marks and 118.5 metres gained per match this season.

Some of her best statistical performances for the year came in wins against Carlton (12 disposals, five tackles) and Gold Coast (13 disposals, five marks).

The versatile defender has continued her strong intercept game and has excelled with her rebound out of defence to help drive Freo into attack.

O’Driscoll is the sole Fremantle player in the final team, with Mim Strom, Sarah Verrier and Dana East missing selection after being named in the initial 22under22 squad.

Senior Coach Trent Cooper praised the young defender for stepping up her output and responsibility over the 2022 season.

“Emma was in the 22under22 side last year but has taken her game to another level this season,” Cooper said.

“She has improved her kicking out of sight and has been tasked with a lot bigger roles this year, taking on some of the opposition’s best forwards.

“Emma has been a part of our very strong backline that work so well together.

“Her energy and enthusiasm lift the side when we are struggling, and she gives us great rebound as well.

“She thoroughly deserves her spot in the 22under22 team.”
