Fremantle assistant and senior development coach Simon Lloyd describes Josh Mellington’s 11-game stint on the sidelines as “nothing but professional”.

The young midfielder sustained a long-term hamstring injury after he had made a promising start to the season at AFL level.

“Josh has really set a very high standard,” Lloyd said.

“He has had a taste of playing AFL football, and that’s what he is here to do.

“We have been very impressed, but he knows that there is a lot of hard work in front of him.

“Josh has shown us through his attitude that he is prepared to do that hard work.”

Lloyd shared his notes on Freo's other rucks and forwards in the WAFL

Josh Mellington (EP) 6 disposals (6 kicks) 2 goals
Josh played his first game back for East Perth reserves as West Perth had a bye. It was great that Josh got through the game without any issues. His run was strong, particularly when East Perth had the ball, and his transition was also very good. He ended up kicking two goals.

Gavin Roberts (P) 7 disposals (3 kicks, 4 handballs) 1 mark

Gavin played as a high forward and showed good work rate to get from contest to contest, particularly surging hard forward. He had a good goal assist in the third quarter where he ran from half-back, but was unfortunately injured later in the game.

Haiden Schloithe (SF) 22 disposals (10 kicks, 12 handballs) 4 marks

Haiden started high forward and positioned really well off stoppages. He was always looking to get used and he set up a couple of goals. Overall he had it 22 times and had four inside 50s. Haiden just needs to work on his delivery into forward 50, but overall he had a good day.

Michael Walters (SD) 19 disposals (13 kicks, 6 handballs) 4 marks, 4 tackles, 2 goals
Michael played forward and was moved onto the ball in the last quarter. He started very well, pushing up the ground and looking very lively with some key involvements. He had a high work rate, which was typified by his effort to chase and apply effort. He ended up kicking two goals, which could have quite easily been four. We were impressed with Michael’s effort.

Zac Clarke (EP) 9 disposals (5 kicks, 4 handballs) 30 hitouts

Zac played the game split between the ruck and up forward. He did a great job in the hitouts, which he dominated. We just need him to have more of an impact around the ground. There were a number of times when he was in great position to mark but just didn’t quite read the flight of the ball. Overall Zac positioned himself well defensively but his work rate just needed to be higher on the day.
