Fremantle coach Ross Lyon said Alex Silvagni’s performance against Adelaide on Sunday afternoon had done his future at the club “no harm”.

Silvagni played a large part in keeping Adelaide captain Taylor Walker to a single goal, playing in front of the key forward and leading to contests.

Composure the key - Walters

The 28 year-old defender, who finished with five marks and four rebound 50s, said it was something he had looked at going into the game and had sought the advice of friend and club legend Luke McPharlin.

“It’s something I worked on and had a look at,” Silvagni said.

“It was a plan going in and I thought it worked pretty well.”

The Crows rank first in the AFL for points per game in 2016 and Silvagni said playing against forwards of that calibre was a good learning opportunity for the defenders.

“They’ve (Adelaide) got firepower everywhere, their smalls, their bigs, so it was good experience for the young guys, and we’ll keep building from here,” he said.

“It’s fantastic, probably the best forward line in the competition.”

Talking points from Adelaide clash

Fremantle’s ball use was again an issue throughout the game, with Adelaide having 28 shots on goal as a direct result of turnovers and Silvagni said it was a focus for the team.

“Our spirit and our fight was fantastic, but it’s our ball use that’s letting us down,” he said.

“It’s been a consistent theme throughout the year so it’s something we need to work on.”

Fremantle face GWS in Sydney on Saturday and Silvagni said the team needed to continue to improve as they look to 2017.

“It’s always improving on what we’re doing and there always needs to be growth,” he said.
