Laurie excited to lace up for pre-season clash

AFLW: Laurie learning the ropes Parris Laurie is flourishing in her first season of AFLW in the ruck.

New Fremantle draftee Parris Laurie is looking forward to her first hitout against an AFLW side when Freo take on Adelaide at TIO Stadium in Darwin on Saturday night.

Fremantle flew out to Darwin on Friday morning and Laurie said she and her teammates can’t wait for the challenge.

“I think all the girls are really excited, especially those girls that have just been drafted this year because it’s the first travel game,” she said.

“We’re excited to do that with the team but I think (we’re) all a bit nervous because it’ll be that first time playing against such a high quality competition.”

While Fremantle’s number one ruck Alicia Janz is injured, Laurie has been tasked with filling the role and is eager to see how she stacks up against her competition.

“I’m hoping that ‘Janzy’ recovers soon but it’s exciting and I actually just can’t wait to see how I go against the other rucks,” she said.

“I think it’ll be a massive challenge but I’m excited for it.”

Laurie captained Claremont in the WAWFL last season and said the step up to AFLW has been an amazing challenge.

“I think, even in match simulation at training, everyone’s always pushing one another,” she said.

“The girls really make sure you’re giving it one hundred per cent, even just in training, so it’s really good.”

Following a strong performance in a simulation match against the WA State Academy last Saturday, senior AFLW coach Trent Cooper named Laurie as one of the better players on the day.

Laurie said she was thrilled to hear the praise from her coach and is now keen to take on the Crows.

“I was happy with my game and it was just good to have a good first run out there,” she said.

“I think this coming weekend will be the real tester up against Adelaide.”

Fremantle’s clash with the Crows will commence at 8pm local time (6.30pm WST) and there will be a live stream available via fremantlefc.com.au.
