Fremantle ruck Alicia Janz said she had an emotional moment with her sister Josie when she was presented her playing jumper ahead of the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s season on Friday.

The Fremantle playing group had their jumpers presented to them by a friend or family member who inspired them along their journey.

Janz said she wouldn’t be the sportsperson she is today if it wasn’t for her older sister’s guidance, with Josie having a nine-year career playing netball for the West Coast Fever.

“The presentation was very emotional because it was from my sister,” Janz said.

“She's helped me throughout my entire sporting journey, from since I was a little kid, so to have her present my jumper to me was just very momentous.

“She’s two years older than me, she was like my first sporting coach I had, so ever since we were little she would make me go above and beyond."

With Josie aware of what it takes to play at the highest level, she had some inspiring words for Alicia.

“We’re both a pair of jokesters, so she grabbed me into a tight hug so I couldn’t pull away,” Janz said.

“She whispered into my ear, through being serious at the same time, saying that putting on this jumper would make me like superwoman, to feel the energy coming from being a part of this club and wearing the jumper. It was a really lovely moment.”

While Janz is expected to miss the start of the season, she’s hopeful of being able to team up with impressive ruck recruit Parris Laurie further into the season.

“I’ve watched Parris from the sidelines while I’ve been doing my rehab and I think she’s just grown tremendously from that first training session to now,” Janz said.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how she goes and we can all work together and all get this club where we need to be.

“I feel like we play very similar, we’re very tight defensively. She’s so fit and can get to all the places she needs to be on the field.

“I’m really looking forward to being able to play with her and see what we can do.”

Fremantle's season commences in just over one week, taking on Melbourne in round one at Casey Fields on Sunday 3 February.
