Versatile defender/midfielder Connor Blakely is continuing to string together impressive performances for Fremantle since returning to the side only three weeks ago.

The Collingwood match was Blakely’s third for 2019 after missing 11 months on the sidelines with knee and hamstring injuries.

Blakely was a standout across the half-back line against Collingwood picking up 27 disposals, five marks and three tackles.

“I didn’t set the world on fire in the first few weeks back but it’s good to build form and match fitness,” Blakely said.

“It’s great to be back at the top level and playing with the boys and I’m looking forward to building on that for the rest of the year.”

Blakely was ecstatic but not surprised that teammate Michael Walters was able to deliver the win for Freo for a second straight week.

“I had full faith in Sonny to get that done he’s such a star,” Blakely said.

“It was a bit of a funny ball going in, Fyfey just slapped it on his boot and Sonny got on the end of it.

“Two weeks in a row (Walters has kicked the winner), you can’t script it any better.”

Fremantle burst out of the blocks in the third quarter kicking four unanswered goals before Collingwood countered with the next four majors to even up the ledger.

Blakely addressed the conversations had at half-time that kick-started the third quarter surge.

“There were a few defensive errors that we had to fix up,” Blakely said.

“We weren’t taking the game on as much as we did against Brisbane.

“As a backs group we got organised behind the ball (in the second half) and were able to move the ball a bit better.”

Blakely said the new-look Fremantle in 2019 are reaping the rewards of their efforts so far.

“It’s so good to celebrate these wins with such a young crew at the footy club at the moment so everyone is really up and about.”

“The win gives us so much confidence going forward.

“There’s no better feeling to celebrating a win like that.”
