Midfielder Andrew Brayshaw said he feels privileged to be in a position as an AFL player to help brighten a sick kid’s day.

The 19-year-old helped launch Freo’s Starlight Purple Haze Game, to be played on Sunday against St Kilda at Optus Stadium, with a visit to Perth Children’s Hospital and the Starlight Express Room.

It will be the 17th running of the game, which helps brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families, with Fremantle fans raising more than $1.4 million for the Starlight Children’s Foundation to date.

“It’s great to see the smile on their faces, it can be very humbling” Brayshaw said.

“I didn’t really think growing up that I could have this sort of impact on kids, and since being with the Fremantle Dockers, I’ve realised that I can do things like this.

"It puts a smile on these kids faces and it makes their day from something as small as coming out for an hour or two and saying g’day.

“It really makes a difference for them. It’s really important and I think a lot of players are in positions like myself, they’re role models to kids like these guys so we should be doing everything we can to make them happy.”

Brayshaw and teammate Bailey Banfield met two of the four ‘Starlight Stars’ who will be special guests at the club this week and on game day.

“There are four kids that are going to come and train with us during the week and be part of the game on Sunday,” Brayshaw said.

“Bailey and I have met Jayden and Matthew this morning, they’re both big Freo fans and they’re excited to come out and watch us play.”

After the lows of Sunday’s loss to Gold Coast, Brayshaw said it was a good chance to take a mental break from the rigours of football.

“Obviously we lost on the weekend and you can be feeling pretty flat getting on the plane and it’s all you can think about,” Brayshaw said.

“You come to a place like this, there are kids going through some really hard times, it definitely puts everything in perspective.

“We lost the game but we’ve got good health and we’re all very fortunate to be in the positions we’re in.”
