Fremantle leader Michael Walters believes poor execution under pressure and inconsistent forward line entries contributed to Freo’s 31-point loss to Hawthorn at University of Tasmania Stadium on Saturday.

Walters believes Freo’s ability to make smart decisions under Hawthorn’s pressure was flawed at times throughout the match.

“In that second quarter we sort of worked our way back into it off some great ball movement coming from half-back and through the midfield,” Walters said.

“But in the second half our ability to take the easy option and hit those short targets failed.

“Skill under pressure really let us down today.”

Fremantle had the ball in their hands more than Hawthorn with the disposal count sitting at 378-369 in Freo’s favour.

But higher possession and clearances (42-39) did not translate to the scoreboard for Fremantle.

Walters said improving the consistency of forward 50 entries is a focal point for the team.

“(Forward line) connection throughout the full four quarters is a major focus,” Walters said.

“At times we are consistently doing that but majority of the time it’s been inconsistent.

“Against teams like Hawthorn you can’t just boot it in…and launch it in long.

“We need to pick those little kicks (inside 50) and make the opposition defend.”

Walters said Freo allowed the Hawks to get back in control of the game after a dominant second quarter led by skipper Nat Fyfe with three goals.

“We let them get back in and control the footy,” Walters said.

“Once we did have composure and the footy in our hands, we somehow found a way to give it back to them too easy.

“We definitely need to put a focus on maintaining possession but also hitting those easy targets.”
