Fremantle forward Sam Switkowski has welcomed a fresh focus at training after going through the first skills-based session of the summer at the club on Wednesday.

The sessions, brought in by new senior coach Justin Longmuir, allow players and coaches to have input on the individual focus of each player.

Switkowski said he enjoyed taking on drills that were specific to his role as a small forward, allowing him to work on all aspects of his game.

“I was working a lot on my tackling and pressure today with Lachie Schultz and the other smalls,” Switkowski said.

“The guys are working on a few strengths and weaknesses as well, so you get a bit of a mix.”

While there was also a focus on running and conditioning throughout the two-hour session, Switkowski said that the players had time to hone in on their individual areas.

“We had the time with our set shots, to go through the routine and get that right, and then it’s just repetition of it all,” Switkowski said.

“Personally, I worked on kicking, goal kicking, tackling, pressure and just ball hunting today with the contested footy, so it was really good.”

Switkowski had an interrupted start to his 2019 season after injuring his hamstring during a pre-season game against Collingwood.

After missing the opening three games, he went on to make 18 appearances in 2019.

He hopes he can benefit from an injury-free pre-season this time around.

“I’m feeling really good, although I was a little bit sore after the first session (on Monday),” Switkowski said.

"The body is in pretty good shape and I’m ready to go for a full summer and get into 2020.”
