Fremantle’s Brett Bewley has found a supporter in captain Nat Fyfe, as the mature-aged midfielder looks to lock down a wing position next season.
Bewley has returned this pre-season looking fit and is running well, highlighted by a strong performance in the club’s two-kilometre time trial three weeks ago.
When asked who had impressed so far, Fyfe was quick to answer.
“I think number one is Brett Bewley, he smashed our time trial and he’s in unbelievable nick,” Fyfe said.
“I think he has got his name pencilled in round one for that wing position and someone is going to have to knock him off for that.
“He’s a guy that is a great preparer and trains really hard.
“We want to build a culture around hard work and guys going after a spot.
“Brett has certainly done that for us.”
Fremantle’s new draftees have also been put through their paces out on the training track.
Fyfe has taken both Hayden Young and Caleb Serong under his wing, with the new recruits enjoying their opportunity to connect with the skipper.
“Two of them are living with me, both Hayden and Caleb,” Fyfe said.
“They’re like sponges, they are keen to learn and they have got some good role models (to learn from).
“But a lot of these guys are half prepared before they even get into the system, they’ve been pretty seamless.”
Fyfe said the playing group is using the pre-season phase to adopt a new game plan brought to the club by senior coach Justin Longmuir.
“We’ve got our new game plan being implemented at the moment,” Fyfe said.
“I’m pretty keen to work with the new players that have come across like Blake Acres and James Aish, as well as our new draftees.
“This time of the year is the best time of the year for connection and environment.
“There is no pressure and there’s not much anxiety around selection or performance.
“It’s a time to work hard implement a new game plan.”
