Fremantle forward Sam Sturt is eyeing off senior footy in 2020 and is learning off a dual Brownlow medallist to help him achieve it.

The 19-year-old is looking to Nat Fyfe for lessons on the mental side of the game, as well as learning his professional habits both on and off the field.

Sturt’s physical make-up has drawn comparisons to that of his skipper when Fyfe himself first arrived at Fremantle in 2009.

Sturt said it was ‘humbling’ to hear the Fyfe comparisons being made.

“Obviously it’s really humbling to hear that, he’s a great player and one of the best in the game,” Sturt said.

“He’s just a champion, so I’ve been hanging around him a lot.

“He is really big on the mental side, so I’ve tried to learn as much as I can from him, and he’s been helping me out a lot.”

Sturt said he relished the opportunity to live with Fyfe shortly after being selected by Freo with pick 17 in the 2018 National Draft.

“I obviously lived with him for two months and he was huge for me,” Sturt said.

“He taught me how to eat and how to be an absolute professional.

“He is very professional away from the club and just does everything right.”

Putting on 6kg since being drafted, Sturt used the 2019 season as a year to build up his body to cope with the rigours of AFL football.

Sturt said his work in the gym and a strong preseason on the track has put him in a good position for an AFL berth this season.

“I’m hoping to play some senior games this year…that’s the end goal,” Sturt said.

“I look to this year as a year that could be a standout year for me, so it’s mainly focusing on that.”

“I’m trying to work really hard at training and impress JL (Justin Longmuir).”

Sturt is enjoying working with Longmuir throughout the preseason and is working hard to meet the expectations placed on him by his new coach.

“I’ve had some really good conversations with Justin, he’s a really nice guy and really easy to talk to,” Sturt said.

“He’s given me some expectations of what he wants to see this year.

“I’m just trying to work really hard in training and meet those (expectations).”
