Midfield prospect Michael Frederick has signed a contract extension with Fremantle that will see him at the club until at least the end of the 2023 season.

Frederick joins fellow draftees from the 2019 NAB AFL National Draft Caleb Serong, Hayden Young and Liam Henry to extend their original contracts for a further two seasons.

The 20-year-old made his debut in the RAC Derby in round seven. He missed only one game for the rest of the season, making 10 appearances in his debut year.

Selected at no.61 in 2019, Frederick has only shown a glimpse of his potential at Fremantle with his speed and creativity.

He said the knowledge of having at least three more seasons in the AFL meant he could focus entirely on improving his game.

“It’s good to know that I’ll be here for another three years, it means I can just narrow down and focus on training and on getting better for 2021,” Frederick said.

“It’s exciting to think about what we can bring next year. We had a really good second part of the season, especially seeing what Caleb Serong has done as well as Adam Cerra and Andy Brayshaw.

“It’s really good for the fans looking ahead for the future. I can’t wait.”

Frederick has quickly become a fan-favourite at Fremantle and he said he was thankful for that support.

“It’s been unreal,” Frederick said.

“I get a lot of messages and you can certainly hear it out there at Optus Stadium. I’m just thankful for the support for myself and the team as well.”

Fremantle head of player personnel David Walls said Frederick was a key part of Freo’s aim to develop their running game.

“This year we saw Michael’s speed, his elite run and his ability to play structure, understand the game plan and execute what the coaches wanted from him,” Walls said.

“We had Bradley Hill and Ed Langdon leave last year so we don’t have a lot of speed on our list. He really gives us that and I think as he grows in confidence we’ll see him use it more and more.

“He’s hungry to improve, he’s really humble and he improved over the season.

“With this contract extension, it will give him some security and allow him to improve year on year. I think it’s his attitude that allows him to do that.”
