Fremantle Senior Coach Justin Longmuir has said experienced defender Oscar McDonald could be utilised as a swingman in Saturday’s match against the Demons at the MCG, if named in the team later this afternoon.
Pat Voss, whose three-match suspension was upheld by the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday, had been playing a forward and second ruck role for the team.
Speaking at his Thursday morning media conference in Melbourne, Longmuir said the Club was considering multiple options to fill the role.
“He’s (McDonald) played that role - Voss’s role - at WAFL level,” Longmuir said.
“We’ve tried to develop him into a bit of a swingman for us and a need-based player.
“We’ve got a number of tall defenders that he’s probably behind at the moment, so to create opportunities for him to get into the team, we’ve put him forward and he’s played that forward-ruck role for us.
“He’s an option (for Saturday).”
McDonald made his Club debut for Fremantle in Round 1 of 2024 against the Lions, but unfortunately suffered a serious knee injury in that game, which resulted in the 29-year-old missing the rest of the AFL season.
If selected later today, Saturday will be the first time McDonald has played a senior AFL game since that injury.
When questioned about other possible options to play the second ruck role, Longmuir said there were several possibilities.
“The other option is to do it within the team,” Longmuir said.
“Drapes finished there (in the ruck) last week.
“It’s not our preferred option (having Treacy as second ruck) - he’s obviously really dominant for us forward of the ball.
“But against some rucks, he’s going to be our best option to second ruck.
“Preference is to keep him (Treacy) forward, but he’s an option for us.
“We are quite tall down back, so there is an option to do it within the team.”
Speaking on the forward line’s scoring capacity over the past three weeks, Longmuir said there was still more to come.
“We probably feel like in the West Coast game, and then again last week, we left a few out there (goals),” he said.
“We’ve got some work to do - it’s not a finished product - but I feel like there is a good mix of ground-level play and marking in our forward line.
“They are looking dangerous at the moment.”
Fremantle have scored 108, 97, and 106 points in the past three weeks, coming away with the win on all three occasions.
