Fremantle Senior Coach Justin Longmuir said a selfless Fremantle side was what impressed him most in Thursday night’s win over the Bombers.
Playing with only three of the team’s seven leadership group members, Longmuir said selfless footy around the ground - to better set up teammates - was the standout.
“I thought we were really selfless with the way we explored our space inside forward 50, fed back to numbers, and squared the ball up,” Longmuir said in his post-match media conference.
“I thought that was a highlight of our game.
“I asked the players for a really strong trademark game.
“I thought we were just a little bit off with that last week - not with the physicality aspect, but more with the communication and connection between our roles.
“I thought that was tremendous today.
“I mentioned the squaring of the ball up inside 50, and none of our forwards looked to kick goals with U-turns. Instead, they fed it back to players in better positions.”
Longmuir’s comments were highlighted in the stats, as Fremantle turned a clearance dominance of 44 - 26 into a strong attacking platform - leading inside 50s 57-34 and equalling the team’s highest goal tally of the season (16).
After starting the match one goal behind teammate Jye Amiss in their career tallies, Josh Treacy opened the scoring in the second half with his third goal of the match and the 100th of his career - becoming the 21st Fremantle player to reach the milestone.
Josh Treacy that is just outstanding.

Although the scoreboard impact going forward was a major note for the night, Longmuir pointed out the consistency of the team’s defence over the course of their five-game win streak in the past month.
“We have high expectations among the group of what we can achieve,” Longmuir said.
“What’s shifted is our ability to stay in the moment and our ability to treat every opponent and every week on its merit - and get back to winning each day.
“We want to play a certain way… team defence is part of that.
“I don’t think we’ve conceded over 70 points in the last five weeks. There is a strong identity being built.”
Fremantle will now play St Kilda at Optus Stadium in Round 16 in the Club's annual Starlight Purple Haze Game. Tickets are available for the clash via Ticketmaster.
