Fremantle will formally farewell Club legend Michael ‘Sonny’ Walters at this Saturday’s game against Hawthorn at Optus Stadium.
To celebrate Sonny’s career, fans will be able to pay tribute to the forward at halftime of the clash with the Hawks, as he completes a lap of honour to acknowledge his outstanding contribution to the Club. Fans are encouraged to remain in their seats and, if able, stand and applaud the 239-game legend.
Highlights of his career will be played on the big screen as Sonny makes his way around Optus Stadium, and thanks to proud co-major sponsors Woodside and Bankwest, fans can collect a special Fremantle’s Favourite Son-Son placard from volunteers at selected gates upon entry.
Full match day information and activities will be communicated by the Club later today.
In conjunction with Sonny’s announcement of his retirement, Midland Gate is proud to announce the commencement of a landmark public art initiative the “Midland Legends Mural “– celebrating local heroes who have made a lasting impact on the community and beyond.
Stage one, now underway, will honour celebrated Sonny.
Raised in Midland, his journey from local Midvale footy fields to AFL stardom with Fremantle stands as a powerful story of talent, resilience, and cultural pride.
The mural will feature a bold and emotive portrayal of Sonny in a life-like format. While still in its early stages, the mural promises to become a striking focal point of the centre and a proud reflection of the community’s spirit.
The artwork is being created by Brendan Lewis of Hope Perth Studios and Jade Dolman (J.D. Penangke), a respected Noongar and Eastern Arrernte artist.
