Fremantle captain Alex Pearce has recapped his match-winning mark and goal following the thrilling six-point win over Port Adelaide.

Speaking after the game, Pearce told Shaun Burgoyne that in the tight contest, he rolled the dice and pushed forward, plucking a mark from a hotly contested pack with less than a minute left on the clock before going back and icing the game with his set shot.

“It’s a bit of a set play when we’re down with not long left,” Pearce said.

“You’ve got to roll the dice a little bit, and it’s normally me or Coxy (Brennan Cox). I’ve had a little bit of success recently, so I said 'stay there champ, I’ll go out and do it.’

“I saw Caleb (Serong), we locked eyes, and I had a bit of space, had a good matchup, and it was a beautiful kick from him.

“It (my kick) only just snuck through to be honest, but that’s all it needed to do.”

Although the win was heroic, the skipper said the performance was far from impressive highlighting Port's dominant second term where they piled on 8.1 to Freo’s 3.4.

“All in all, it was a bit disappointing (the performance),"Pearce said.

"In the second quarter we really took our foot off a little bit. We lacked in and around the contest, and we got a good old-fashioned spray at halftime.

“I thought in the third quarter we lifted, but we let a good team back in the game. We just had to keep clawing our way through.”

At half-time, the team led clearances 24-14 but trailed inside 50s, 23-25, with Pearce highlighting the belief within the team that no matter the score they always back themselves in.

By the end of the game, the team had put the foot to the throat in both statistical categories, winning clearances by 18 (43–25) and inside 50s by eight (54–46).

“We’ve got good confidence that we’ll go to the end, and we’ve been doing that all year, particularly lately, so we knew if we just stuck to our plans we’d get through,” Pearce said.

"We missed a few opportunities up forward late, but we got there in the end.”

The win sees Fremantle sit inside the top four with two games of the home-and-away season remaining, with a blockbuster clash against fifth-placed Brisbane on Friday, 15 August at Optus Stadium.
