Stef Giro’s family and friends are set to head to Melbourne this weekend to watch the Freo youngster debut on Sunday when Fremantle take on Collingwood at the MCG.

The 19-year-old said the support from his family and friends has been vital over his junior years and is excited to play in front of them at the MCG.

“It’s great to have them come over,” Giro said.

“A lot of them have watched me all the way through from playing juniors, so to have them watching my first AFL game is great.”

The small forward, who was recruited from Norwood with pick no. 21 in the 2017 rookie draft, found out he would debut on Sunday in Friday morning’s team meeting.

He was presented his no. 42 playing jumper by Michael Walters.

“I was feeling really nervous sitting in there, but I was really glad it was me,” Giro said.

“Once I was on the track and got training I got all the nerves out and I am ready to go. I’m excited to get on the plane.”

Giro said all the players ‘got around him’ after training but said the advice from fellow first-year players was comforting.

“Bailey Banfield, (Adam) Cerra and (Andy) Brayshaw came up to me and said don’t get too nervous and just make sure you do your job.

“I’ll run my hardest, that’s for sure and just give it my all.”
