Fremantle’s semi-final against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium last year was a tale of two halves.

Freo made a super start, leading by five goals in the second quarter, but the Crows reeled Ross Lyon’s side in and eventually ran out 10-point winners.

The moral of the story for Freo was quarters – four of them. The first half dominance amounted to nothing in the end because the side fell away in the third and fourth quarters.

So what did the stats tell us in the first half?

Kicks – Freo +20
Inside 50s – Freo +5
Contested possessions – Freo +8
Clearances – Freo +8
Tackles – Freo +6
Marks – Freo +9
Uncontested marks – Freo +8

There was a major reversal after the main break, as these stats show:

Kicks – Adel +39
Inside 50s – Adel +6
Contested Possessions – Adel +5
Clearances – Adel +1
Tackles – Adel +6
Marks – Adel +37
Uncontested Marks – Adel +38

The stat that stands out is uncontested marks, which is a great indicator of work rate. Freo basically stopped running as hard in the second half.

The men in purple and white will look to put in a four-quarter effort this Saturday against the Crows.
