For Fremantle fans Coby and Sofia Matthews, of Dalkeith, the best part of Freo’s open training session on Wednesday was receiving a birthday present from a special friend.

Tommy Sheridan has known the two Freo fans since helping out with Coby’s footy training sessions.

“We kicked with Tommy today, and he’s been a good friend to us,” Coby said.

“We train at Dalkeith and Tommy, (Matt) Taberner and Sean Hurley came and trained us, which was a great session.”

Freo cultivating leaders

After Freo finished their training session, Sheridan made the day all the more memorable for birthday girl Sofia, who turned 13 on Wednesday.

“I met Coby and his sister Sofia about 12 months ago, and a close friend of mine told me it’s her birthday today so we thought we’d surprise her and give her a jumper,” Sheridan said.

Sofia didn’t receive just any jumper from Sheridan, but his game-worn, Starlight Purple Haze jumper, and it was safe to say she was ecstatic with her birthday surprise.

“I’m turning 13, and I don’t play footy but I’m a big, massive Freo fan,” Sofia said.

“Tommy came over and gave me a birthday present which was really nice and I’m going to keep that jumper for ages.”
