Matt Taberner has had a taste of life as an AFL footballer, after being invited to train with the club since Monday 3 December.

He better get used to it.

The club today added him to its rookie list by selecting the 197cm tall forward with the 11th pick in the Rookie Draft.

“It’s great to get an opportunity to get a go at this level,” he said.

“I’m so happy to be with Fremantle, they have treated me well over the last week-and-a-half that I have been training here.”

Taberner played for Myrtleford in the Ovens and Murray League before playing the last four games of the season for the Murray Bushrangers.

Taberner has already noticed the step up.

“One of the most eye-opening things has been the time commitment,” he said.

“You’re not just here three days a week, you’re here five days a week.

“It’s always on your mind; diet and recovery, it’s pretty full on but I think I’ll get the hang of it.”

Taberner said there was plenty to work on in his game but highlighted running as one of his main strengths.

“I have always been a pretty natural runner but I have been trying to work on it over the last few years,” he said.

“I have a lot of areas that I also have to improve on, but I suppose running is one of my strengths.”
