Tendai Mzungu, Ryan Crowley and Nick Suban will wear back armbands in tomorrow’s Redkite Cup match against Sydney.

The trio who are Redkite ambassadors, will wear the armbands in honour of Joanna Gauiva, a 16-year-old Freo fan who recently lost her battle with cancer.

Joanna had previously visited Fremantle Oval and watched a training session where she met the players and coaching staff.

“Joanna passed away a few weeks ago,” Mzungu said.

“We had a bit to do with her, she was a great girl and has a great family, it was really sad to her about her passing.”

“I know myself along with Ryan and Nick would like to honour her and her family in tomorrow’s game and that’s why we’ve decided to wear the armbands.”

Fremantle and Sydney have played for the Redkite Cup since 2008, in support of Redkite, a charity partner of both clubs.

The charity has been supporting children, young people and their families through the cancer journey for more than 30 years by providing real and practical support from hospital to home.

Redkite provides families with the must-haves including information, support and counselling, financial assistance and help to keep children up to speed with school and training.

Mzungu and Jeremy Laidler, a Redkite ambassador for Sydney spent time on Friday afternoon meeting two Redkite families.

“It was great to come down to the SCG today and meet some of the families Redkite support, we had a kick with the kids and got to have a chat to the parents,” Mzungu said.

“After the game tomorrow one of the families will present the cup to the winning team.

“It’s a really great initiative for the club to support, and hopefully we get to see a Redkite family in the changerooms after the game,” Mzungu said.
