Talented musician and star AFL defender Luke McPharlin has joined forces with former X Factor contestant Matt Gresham for a jam session.

Gresham made the top 24 of the hit Seven program in 2012 and 2013 and is one of Australia’s most popular independent artists.

McPharlin met Gresham, who is a Freo Dockers supporter, a couple of years ago.

“I’m a big fan of his music, he’s a big fan of the football club, and we developed a friendship from there,” the Freo defender said.

The pair have performed a few gigs together in Fremantle since meeting, including at musical clubs Mojos and The Orient.

McPharlin dropped by Gresham’s house a few days ago for a jam.

“Matt asked to see some music that I’d been working on, so I showed him an original song call ‘Turning Around’,” McPharlin said.

“He jumped on the lap guitar and added some bits and pieces on it with his mate, Tricky, who did some harmonica.”

The clip was recorded and uploaded onto YouTube.

Gresham did not grow up a fan of AFL, but once he discovered the sport two years ago, he fell in love with it.

The Fremantle Dockers were the obvious choice for him, given he grew up in Freo.

“I love Freo, I love the town and the vibe here, it’s wicked,” he said.

“Ever since I got into footy I just love it and I love the Freo Dockers.

“The past couple of years has been amazing for the club, they’ve really started to step it up.”

Gresham initially didn’t realise McPharlin was a musician when the pair met.

“Luke sent me an email saying ‘ lets do a gig together’,” he said.

“I wasn’t aware he played music, I was like ‘a gig’, I thought he wanted to come around and go for a run together or something.

“I then YouTubed his performance on ‘The Footy Show’ from a few years ago and I was like, ‘wow’.

“He’s an amazing athlete and musician, a bit of an all-rounder.”

On the jam session, Gresham said he was very impressed with McPharlin’s track.

“He’s amazing, a great songwriter with a really great voice,” Gresham said.

“It was inspiring, it was really very cool to chill with him on a different level because it was on a personal level at home.”
