They say the best trait of a small forward is an ability to be in the right place at the right time.

Max Duffy showed in his AFL debut that he knows where to be to land the opportunistic goals.

The 21-year-old started as the sub and booted two crucial majors after entering the game midway through the third quarter.

It wasn’t enough to help Freo get over the line in a thrilling two-point loss to Geelong, but Duffy showed a lot of promise in his debut.

His first goal came with his first kick in AFL football, a lethal finish from 50 metres.

“I just ended up at the right spot at the right time, in a bit of space and I put it through,” Duffy said.

“I thought with my first kick I was going to be pretty nervous, so to be able to run and kick through it was a nice way to start.”

He kicked another in the pulsating final term when he took the advantage and pounced on a loose ball after Freo had won a free kick in front of goal.

After the game, Duffy was clearly relieved to have played his first AFL game, but he couldn’t hide the disappointment of Freo’s loss.

“It was real intense finish, but obviously a disappointing finish,” he said.

“I thought we tried all night, our effort was really there and we gave it everything.

“I was excited to be out there, I loved every minute of it.”

Duffy said there were a number of eye-openers at AFL level.

“The crowd, the whole intensity before the game and during the game,” he said.

“It was a great game to be a part of and I’m ecstatic to have made my debut.”
