Chris Mayne, is known for his manic pressure on the ground, he was even described by Hayden Ballantyne as an ‘animal'.

But off the field, Mayne is better known for something a little different.

Mayne is an ambassador for the Starlight Children’s Foundation and is preparing for the round one Starlight Purple Haze Game against Port Adelaide at Domain Stadium, on Sunday 5 April at 4.40pm.

The 26-year-old has been an ambassador since 2009 and said when he was offered the opportunity, he didn’t think twice.

Speaking from the Freo Fundamentals Gala Day at Fremantle Oval the forward said he was looking forward to round one.

“I jumped at the chance to be a Starlight ambassador because I grew up at Princess Margaret Hospital and did a lot of work there through being a cleft lip baby,” Mayne said.

“To be able to give back to Starlight and give my time to see the kids and try and put a smile on their face, it definitely gives you something to cherish.

“Seeing all the fans down there dressed in purple supporting Starlight and giving back to the kids is a lot of fun.”

Freo fans are encouraged to dress in purple and donate to the Starlight volunteers who will be tin rattling in the precinct of Domain Stadium leading up to the Purple Haze game.

Non-playing Fremantle players will also be helping out 30 minutes before bounce down.

Over the last three years Mayne has developed a special connection with Starlight Wishkid, Tayten Dowson.

“Last year after the game we carried the kids off and I had Tayten on my shoulders,” Mayne said.

“We’ve had a very close bond over the past three years, to be able to do that and share that moment with her, she loved it.

“All games are important but playing in the Purple Haze game does bring out something special.

“To know I’m playing a game for her, it definitely brings out the best in me.”
