Fremantle defender Paul Duffield says the team is under no illusions about what to expect when taking on Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.

Reigning premiers Hawthorn thrashed Geelong by 62 points, while Freo won its opening round clash by seven points against Port Adelaide.

Match report: Freo prevails in epic

Duffield believes that quality sides always bounce back from an off-week and he expects no less from the Cats.

“Hawthorn were fantastic,” he said.

“Geelong might have been for whatever reason, maybe fractionally off, and that’s all it takes when you play really good sides.

“I think the game (against Geelong) will be as fierce as it always has been.

“Good sides have the ability to let the past result go and I think they’ll move on from that pretty quickly and focus in on us.

“Everyone’s just ready for a great game of footy.”

Duffield said he is excited to play against another quality team early in the season.

“We know Geelong down there are exceptionally tough to beat,” he said.

“We have a good record of playing them down there to a degree, in the last couple of games we’ve had tight contests.

“It’s going to be another red-hot game and we’re looking forward to it.”

Geelong star Jimmy Bartel may be in doubt for the contest after suffering a concussion after a tackle only seconds before the final siren.

Duffield believes no matter who plays, Freo will need to bring its very best effort over the four quarters to be able to compete or get over the line.

“You need your best players out there on the park for the side to play really well and I’m sure they’ll be doing everything they can to make sure he’s (Bartel) right to play,” Duffield said.

“You’ve got to play the best and beat the best if you want to be the best.”

Fremantle takes on Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Sunday 12 April.

Bounce down is 1.10pm local time.
