Surgery on Alex Silvagni’s injured hamstring on Thursday was successful, marking the start of a long road to recovery for the unlucky defender.

Senior coach Ross Lyon said hopefully Silvagni would be back in 10 to 12 weeks after significant surgery in Melbourne.

“Surgery has gone well,” he said.

“It’s disappointing for him, we feel for him.”

Lyon said Silvagni was a vital part of the team’s character, particularly during his recent injury troubles.

“He’s part of the character of the group,” he said.

“His resilience and his team first attitude are really admired.”

Lyon said if his rehabilitation went to plan, he would be available in the last third of the season.

“He’ll work his way through and should be back in 10 to 12 weeks,” he said.

“There is still six weeks to play, get conditioning, find form and push for a spot.”

Lyon said the situation for Silvagni and fellow injury listed Anthony Morabito was tough.

“They’re the ones who put their head on the pillow at night and deal with it,” he said.

“Hopefully all our support helps that make that process a bit easier.”
