Captain Matthew Pavlich and forward Michael Walters will need to pass concussion tests to play against Essendon this week.

Sports science manager Jason Weber said both had done well on Tuesday.

Head hits hurt Freo

“They’ll be a genuine test for this week, if it all goes well they’ll be available for selection,” he said.

Young Freo tall Michael Apeness suffered a serious knee injury playing for Peel Thunder at the weekend and is facing a lengthy stint on the sideline of 10 to 12 weeks.

“Michael fell really quite awkwardly in a contested situation,” he said.

“He’s done some significant damage to his PCL.”

Weber said Zac Dawson, who is recovering from a groin injury, was close to a return to the field.

“Zac is progressing really well,” he said.

“Whether he gets to the selection table next week, we’ll know by the end of the week.”

Surgery on Alex Silvagni’s hamstring went well and it is hoped he will be available towards the end of the season.
