Fremantle goal sneak Michael Walters said he tried to model himself on fellow forward Hayden Ballantyne when he arrived at the club.

Walters said Ballantyne was a textbook small forward, who not only kicked goals, but tackled and pressured opposition defenders.

“When I first got to the club he was the sort of player I aspired to be,” he said.

“To have worked with him and played with him for the last couple of years has been outstanding for me.”

The pair is among the most potent small forward combinations in the AFL and provide a great balance to Fremantle’s tall timber such as skipper Matthew Pavlich.

Room to improve: Walters

Ballantyne has played two games since serving a two-match suspension and no one is happier to have him return than Walters.

“To have him back in the side is fantastic,” he said.

“We work well with each other and I really enjoy playing with him and learning from him

“All our forwards try and replicate the pressure Ballas brings.”

Ballantyne said both were working well together and crumbing well.

“We’re getting to the feet of the big guys, but they’re marking a lot,” he said.

“We’re doing all the rights things, we keep ticking those boxes and the goals will come.”
