Fremantle ruckman Aaron Sandilands has smashed an AFL hit-outs record that stood for more 33 years.

Sandilands amassed a staggering 69 hit-outs in a dominant display in Freo's nail-biting 11-point win over Adelaide on Saturday night.

He broke the record of 63 hit-outs set by North Melbourne ruckman Gary Dempsey that has stood since 1982.

Freo notched up 86 hit-outs to 27 in tough, wet conditions at Adelaide Oval and won clearances 52 to 48.
