Michael Barlow says there is plenty of time for Fremantle to rediscover its early season form.

The side started the year in remarkable touch, winnings its first eight games but has had patchy form in recent weeks.

Fremantle still sits on top of the ladder with a 12-2 record.

Barlow said Sunday's heavy loss to Hawthorn needed to be put into perspective.

"A lot has been said about us dropping off over the last few weeks," he said.

"It's only Round 14 so we can have a good look at where we can improve.

"That's exciting."

Barlow said Hawthorn were the obvious benchmark of the competition.

"We've always said we're chasing Hawthorn," he said.

"They're the best and today was a really good indication of why they are the best."
