Fremantle defender Lee Spurr says it is not fair to criticise Fremantle’s forwards for a lack of goals when they are being starved of opportunity by poor play further up the field.

Spurr told 6PR Sports Today on Thursday that the forwards’ low goal output in recent weeks was due to poor entries and ball use from teammates.

“We haven’t been providing them with the best delivery,” he said.

“On the weekend they were starved of opportunity.

“We’ve really got to give our forwards the best opportunity and provide better entries.

“You can’t have a go at the forwards if we’re not executing our plans.”

Fremantle recorded 38 inside-50s for just eight marks in Sunday’s 72-point loss.

Spurr said the focus against Carlton would be on finding targets more efficiently inside-50.

“(Against Hawthorn) we didn’t really move the ball very well and didn’t really take the game on,” he said.

“We want to put the opposition on the back foot.”

Fremantle play Carlton at Domain Stadium on Saturday 18 July. Bounce down is at 5.40pm.
