Fremantle senior coach Ross Lyon has welcomed an AFL trial of four umpires on the ground this round.

The AFL hopes for better decisions and less fatigue when four umpires adjudicate Saturday night's Brisbane v Gold Coast clash at the Gabba.

Lyon told 6PR on Tuesday that it would give umpires more eyes on holding and blocking off the ball.

“We’re trying to get rid of holding and checking off the ball,” he said.

“It’s hard for the umpires to see everything.

“In a game against Brisbane, Hayden Ballantyne was basically getting tackled every time he turned to run on the off-ball side.

“If the umpires are watching the ball, the fourth umpire might eradicate that.”

Lyon said the umpiring fraternity would benefit from extra resources.

“I think coaching and analysis can lift to what they’re competing against at club land,” he said.

“They need to improve with the rest of the competition, which I think they have.”
