Michael Johnson hopes Fremantle breaks its own record for the most Indigenous players fielded by a single team in VFL/AFL history.

Fremantle set the record in 2003 when seven Indigenous players lined up against West Coast in round five.

Port Adelaide equalled the record in round 23, 2015, coincidentally against Fremantle.

New recruits Harley Bennell and Shane Yarran join Danyle Pearce, Michael Walters, Jon Griffin, Alex Pearce, Brady Grey, Stephen Hill and Johnson on Fremantle’s list.

Johnson, who took part in the Indigenous All Stars Camp in early 2015, said the club had a history of Indigenous players.

“There has always been a huge amount of Indigenous players at the club,” he said.

“I just missed out on that record game.

“I came just after that era.”

I want my football to do the talking: Bennell

Johnson said he and Walters met with Bennell before he was traded to Fremantle to discuss a potential move home from the Gold Coast.

“Myself and Sonny were keen to catch up with him,” he said.

“We know him personally.

“We just told him about the way we go about things at Fremantle.

“It was great to sign him and I’m sure he’ll be great for this team.”

Fremantle’s Indigenous history dates back to its inaugural side in 1995 that included Winston Abraham.
