Mark Harvey was just two days into the job after taking over from Chris Connolly as interim coach and the doubters were questioning the form of certain senior players as they were set to take on the Adelaide Crows in round 16, 2007.

Former captain Peter Bell, playing his 286th career match, reminded everyone why he was a legend of the game and of Fremantle, as he turned back the clock in a remarkable 30 disposal and two goal performance, laying the platform for Freo to stun Adelaide, in Adelaide, 20.6 (126) to 15.11 (101).

Bell said the change of coaches was a wiping of the slate for many players.

“It was a pretty tumultuous time around the club with Chris leaving, but Mark came in and kept it simple, and it was good to come away with a win from Adelaide which is a pretty difficult place to play.” Bell said.

Matthew Pavlich again showed his class as a key forward, and highlighted why the media was alive with talk about Adelaide and Port attempting to recruit him, taking 14 marks on his way to five crucial goals, as Adelaide, trailing by as much as 24-points, twice fought back to level the scores.

Talking points ahead of Adelaide

But it was the lift in the final term, and hard running the likes of Heath Black (29 possessions, 1 goal) and Ryan Crowley (29 possessions, 9 marks) in the face off 40,000 screaming fans at AAMI Stadium, which gave Fremantle fans belief that finals were not beyond their reach.

Bell said Pavlich was a consistent performer and one of the best key forwards of his generation, who always performed well in Adelaide.

“He enjoyed playing in Adelaide, his home town, either against Adelaide or Port and he had a number of other excellent performances playing over there.” Bell said.

And Bell believes Fremantle can turn things around this season, but it is going to take a lot of hard work.

“The club has a lot of fortitude. There will be different personnel getting an opportunity.”

“The job gets even more difficult with injuries to key players, but I agree with Ross, injuries weren’t to blame for the performances before the weekend.”

Fremantle will be hoping Pavlich winds back the years to have another memorable performance when they face an in-form Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon.
