David Mundy says the performance of the team on Sunday afternoon was a tribute to the club’s greatest ever player.

Fremantle played with grit and determination in Matthew Pavlich’s last game for Freo, beating the Western Bulldog’s by 20 points at Domain Stadium.

Mundy, who chaired Pavlich off after both his 350th and 353rd games, said the win was a performance befitting the club legend’s final game.

“Our goal wasn’t necessarily to go in and get the win, although that’s what we always like to do,” he said.

“It was about how we went about it and displaying the values and displaying our individual character for Matthew and really showing him what playing with him means.”

Gritty win for Pav

Mundy payed a personal tribute to the retiring Pavlich’s impact on both the club and himself.

“Matthew’s been a fantastic teammate, he’s been a fantastic captain of this club and he’s been a great friend and a really strong pillar of support for me,” he said.

“I’ve got a lot of really fond memories I will cherish of my time with Matthew throughout my career.”

Mundy also said he has relished the opportunity to captain Fremantle in 2016 and wants to continue in the role.

He was elected this season after Pavlich stepped down after nine years as captain and said he enjoyed the challenge.

“It’s been a challenging year,” he said.

“I’ve learnt a lot about myself and our leadership group this year and I think we’ve really stuck by each other and really tried to work our way through it.

“We’re still invested and still trying to drive the group as best we can.”

'Pav legend to grow': Lyon

Coming off a disappointing season, the 251-game veteran said he had every confidence in the club to turn their fortunes around heading into 2017.

“I have full faith in our board and our coaches and senior management at the club,” he said.

“Our senior players and core group are still a really strong, united group.”

Mundy said there were still positives to take away with the performance of younger members of the squad particularly pleasing.

“Out of the poor season we can take some positives, the development of the young guys and the strength and unity of the group through a pretty difficult phase of our history was something to be really positive about,” he said

“It has really stimulated the group to come back renewed and re-invigorated for next pre-season to hopefully improve.”
