Darcy Tucker will certainly be bigger in his second season at Fremantle, and the 19-year-old is doing what he can to be better.

The speedy midfielder has taken a lot from playing 12 games at AFL level in 2016, while adding another 13 in a premiership season for Peel.

“I feel much better prepared,” Tucker said.

“I obviously know what it’s like to go through a pre-season now, so coming into my second year I can use that to my advantage.

“As a second-year player I’m actually doing all of the pre-season, however in the first year they take you out of certain drills and stuff like that. Now I’m getting into it, it is different.”

Tucker has added some condition during his time with Fremantle, and is working on building the impressive speed that earned a start in the half-time sprint on Grand Final day.

“I think I’ve put on about six or seven kilograms since I got here last year,” Tucker said.

“I’ve put on a little bit, so I’ll keep working on that and hopefully build my running as well.

“I need to build a body that can compete at AFL level. That comes with my fitness and putting on a bit of size as well, so they’re my main focuses to get through a big pre-season and set myself up fro 2017.”

Even if he is fitter, stronger and more experienced, Tucker is not expecting to have any games handed to him.

“I’m under no illusions, and I know there’s going to be a big competition for spots,” Tucker said.

“We’ve obviously got some new boys in as well who are very good on the track and are up and about. It’s always healthy when there’s competition for spots and that just drives me to improve and work really hard so I can get a game this year.”

Drafted as a defender, Tucker started at half-back with Fremantle but moved into the midfield, averaging just under 18 disposals over the final five rounds of the season.

The change has suited Tucker, who put in a season-best performance against the Western Bulldogs in round 23 with 22 disposals and four tackles.

“I’ve been training in the midfield group and I spent most of my time on the wing last year,” Tucker said.

“That’s where I’m training for this year as well, but I’m happy to play where the coaches want me.”
