Fremantle’s home opener in the NAB AFL Women’s competition is expected to test the capacity of Fremantle Oval, as excitement builds in the lead-up to the inaugural season.

After Saturday’s round one clash against the Western Bulldogs at VU Whitten Oval, Fremantle return home for round two against Brisbane on Sunday 12 February from 4:05pm at Fremantle Oval.

Interest in the new women’s league is booming. Last week, Fremantle’s AFLW membership ticked over 1,000 and has continued to rise, while Friday night’s Carlton v Collingwood clash was relocated to Ikon Park to accommodate a larger than predicted crowd.

With free entry, senior coach Michelle Cowan is hopeful that fans will come out in droves.

“It would be great to have a record crowd and it would be fantastic to see,” Cowan said.

“The girls have been working hard, and we’d love a sea of purple around Fremantle Oval.

“I know the girls would love to run out and see the incredible support that we’ve been receiving over the past few months. Everyone’s been fantastic to the girls in the lead up and I think we can reward our supporters with a good contest.”

The banner crew will be on hand to raise Fremantle’s first women’s banner on home soil. The message will be a special one, coming from a fan via the Design the Banner competition.

On top of the action on the ground, fans can expect plenty of family fun in the stands, with face painting, food and a chance to kick the footy in the interactive zones.

One of our 'Friends of the Foundation', The Heart Foundation, will be located near the main gate collecting donations and encouraging fans to 'Lock in the Love'.

It’s easy to get involved. The Heart Foundation will provide a heart and a lock to attach the ‘Lock in the Love’ installation and fans can dedicate that lock to someone they love or in remembrance of someone that has passed.

Whether a Freo fan from the early days, or new to the game - Michelle Cowan knows that next Sunday’s clash will be a memorable one for all in attendance.

“Why not come down and be a part of the first ever AFL Women’s game in Perth?” Cowan said.

“It’s a great opportunity, and something that many will remember forever - you could say that you were there for Fremantle’s first ever women’s home game.”
